How a Small Painting Company Beat a National Franchise on Google
Marcus and his brother started a residential painting company in a market dominated by national franchises. CertaPro and Five Star Painting had the top Google spots, hundreds of reviews, and massive ad budgets. Marcus had a van, two ladders, and a Facebook page. Here is how he outranked them in 8 months.
Starting Position: Page 5 of Google
When Marcus came to us, his business existed online as a Facebook page and a free Wix website that loaded in 9 seconds. He was invisible on Google. His competitors had 200+ reviews, professional websites, and were running Local Services Ads. The gap looked impossible to close.
But national franchises have a weakness: their marketing is generic and corporate. Their websites are templated. Their content is not locally relevant. And their review responses are clearly written by a call center. We saw the opportunity.
The Strategy: Hyper-Local Everything
Month 1-2: Foundation
- Built a fast WordPress website (1.5 second load time) with 12 individual service pages: interior painting, exterior painting, cabinet painting, deck staining, wallpaper removal, pressure washing, drywall repair, trim and millwork, commercial painting, and more
- Created location pages for 8 cities in his service area, each with unique content about painting in that specific area (climate considerations, popular home styles, average costs)
- Fully optimized Google Business Profile with 30 project photos, all services listed, and weekly Google Posts
- Launched a review funnel: every completed job triggered an automatic text requesting a review
Month 3-5: Content and Authority
- Published 2 blog posts per month targeting informational keywords: “how much does it cost to paint a house exterior in [state],” “best exterior paint colors for [local architectural style],” “how long does interior paint take to dry”
- Built citations on 25+ directories with consistent business information
- Got featured in a local “best of” article by reaching out to the writer directly
- Started posting before and after carousels on Instagram (cross posted to Facebook)
Month 6-8: Rankings Surge
By month 6, Marcus was appearing in the Map Pack for “painters near me” and “house painters [city].” By month 8, he was the #1 organic result for his primary city and appearing in the top 3 for 5 surrounding cities.
Results After 8 Months
| Metric | Before | After 8 Months |
|---|---|---|
| Google reviews | 7 | 89 |
| Monthly website visitors | ~30 | ~1,200 |
| Monthly leads | 2-3 (word of mouth) | 28 |
| Ranking: “painters [primary city]” | Not visible | #1 organic + Map Pack |
| Monthly revenue | $6,000 | $18,000 |
| Team size | 2 (Marcus + brother) | 4 (hired 2 painters) |
Why a Small Company Can Beat a Franchise
Franchises have budget advantages but strategic disadvantages. Their websites are cookie cutter templates that cannot be customized for local markets. Their content is generic. Their reviews come from across the entire franchise network, not the local team. And their response to customer feedback is impersonal.
A local company that invests in hyper-local content, personally responds to every review, and builds genuine community presence can absolutely outrank a franchise. Google rewards relevance, not size.
