Why Most Contractor Websites Do Not Convert (And Exactly How to Fix Yours)
In This Article
You are paying for Google Ads. You are posting on social media. You are even ranking on Google for a few keywords. But the phone is not ringing. The problem is almost never traffic. The problem is what happens after someone lands on your website. Here are the 7 most common conversion killers and how to fix each one.
The 7 Conversion Killers
After auditing hundreds of contractor websites, we see the same problems over and over. Most sites have at least 3 of these issues:
Fix 1: Put a CTA Above the Fold
Above the fold means the portion of the page visible without scrolling. On most contractor websites, the first thing a visitor sees is a stock photo and a vague tagline like “Quality Service You Can Trust.” There is no phone number, no contact form, and no clear action to take.
The fix: Your above-the-fold area should contain: your phone number (clickable), a short contact form (name, phone, service needed), and a clear headline that states what you do and where (“Licensed Plumber Serving Orlando and Central Florida”). A visitor should be able to contact you within 5 seconds of landing on any page.
Fix 2: Make Your Site Fast
A website that takes 5 seconds to load loses over 50% of visitors before the page even appears. Most contractor sites we audit load in 4 to 8 seconds on mobile. That is unacceptable.
The fix: Compress all images (use WebP format), remove unused plugins, use a caching plugin, and choose fast hosting. Test your site at PageSpeed Insights and aim for a mobile score of 70 or higher. Every second faster means more leads.
Fix 3: Show Social Proof Immediately
A new visitor does not know if they can trust you. They need proof, fast. Most contractor sites bury their reviews on a separate Reviews page that nobody visits.
The fix: Embed your best Google reviews on your homepage, above the fold or immediately below. Show your star rating and review count. Include a link to read more on Google. Social proof should be visible within the first scroll on every page.
Fix 4: Create Individual Service Pages
One page that lists all your services with a bullet point each does not rank for any keyword and does not convince any homeowner that you are a specialist.
The fix: Create a separate, detailed page for each service. A plumber should have individual pages for drain cleaning, water heater installation, pipe repair, bathroom remodeling, sewer line repair, and every other service. Each page should have unique content, a relevant photo, and a CTA. These pages rank for specific keywords and convert better because they match the visitor’s intent.
Fix 5: Optimize for Mobile
Over 60% of your visitors are on their phone. If buttons are too small to tap, text is too small to read, or the layout breaks on mobile, you are losing more than half your potential customers.
The fix: Test your site on your phone. Can you call with one tap? Can you fill out a form easily? Is the text readable without zooming? If not, your site needs a mobile-responsive redesign. This is not optional in 2025.
Fix 6: Add Trust Signals
License numbers, insurance badges, years in business, and association memberships build trust. Most contractor sites either do not display these or hide them on an About page.
The fix: Create a trust bar near the top of every page showing: licensed and insured badge, years in business, number of Google reviews, any relevant certifications. These should be visible without scrolling.
Fix 7: Make the Next Step Obvious
After reading about your services, the visitor needs to know exactly what to do next. Many contractor sites leave the visitor guessing.
The fix: Every page should end with a clear CTA: “Call us at [number] for a free estimate” or “Fill out the form below and we will call you within 1 hour.” Be specific about what happens when they reach out. “Free estimate within 24 hours” is better than “Contact us.”
